This book tells a story to shake the conscience of the world. It is the catalogue of the first-ever traveling exhibition about the Auschwitz concentration camp, where 1.1 million people—mostly Jews, but also non-Jewish Poles, Roma, and others—lost their lives. More than 280 objects and images from the exhibition are illustrated herein. Drawn from the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and other collections around the world, they range from the intimate (such as victims' family snapshots and personal belongings) to the immense (an actual surviving barrack from the Auschwitz III-Monowitz satellite camp); all are eloquent in their testimony. An authoritative yet accessible text weaves the stories behind these artifacts into an encompassing history of Auschwitz—from a Polish town at the crossroads of Europe, to the dark center of the Holocaust, to a powerful site of remembrance. Auschwitz: Not long ago. Not far away. is an essential volume for everyone who is interested in history and its lessons.

A gorgeous hardcover time capsule of the emo music scene as it was from 1996 to 2006, featuring never-before-seen photographs and never-before-told stories from key emo musicians, photographers, and icons. While the term emo has become a familiar label, there was a time when that wasn’t the case. Many bands of the mid-to-late '90s would never have classified themselves as such. With the advent of the 2000s, the previously underground emo scene was put on the map, and the term and sound of the genre morphed into something new. Today, the musical and cultural impact of this movement is alive and well, responsible for some of the biggest and most influential acts of the 21st century, from Jimmy Eat World to My Chemical Romance, and the emo label has been reclaimed by those who can’t imagine life without it. Through rare and never-before-seen photographs Amy Fleisher Madden, founder of Fiddler Records (Dashboard Confessional, New Found Glory, Recover, and more), thoughtfully and lovingly put together this moving archive of the second and third waves of emo. With a foreword by Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional and revealing essays from Frank Iero, Geoff Rickly, Norman Brannon, Matt Pryor, Jesse Johnson, Andrew McMahon, and Bob Nanna, as well as insights and bite-sized narratives from photographers and other musicians of the era, this heartwarming time capsule expounds an extraordinary moment in music history—a scene that gave life to not only numerous big names but also to a powerful sound and even more powerful friendships. Featuring more than eighty bands, including: - Jimmy Eat World - Dashboard Confessional - My Chemical Romance - Texas Is the Reason - Taking Back Sunday - The Get Up Kids - Thursday - Fall Out Boy - American Football - Jawbreaker From basements and VFW halls to dive bars and holes-in-the-wall, during long overnight drives through the middle of nowhere and stolen moments of sleep in carbon-copy motels, Negatives captures the heart of what made up this tight-knit community, an official archive of life as it was, taking you on stage, behind the curtain, and on the road. A UNIQUE LOVE LETTER FROM EXPERT AUTHOR: The first of its kind, Negatives is not a critic's take—rather a touching and heartfelt time capsule and photographic archive of the scene as told by those who lived it. RARE AND NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN MATERIAL: Founder of Fiddler Records Amy Fleisher Madden compiles hundreds of high-quality photos of more than eighty bands, as well as essays and bite-sized narratives from photographers and key musicians of the era. STAR CONTRIBUTORS: Foreword by Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional) with essays by Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), Geoff Rickly (Thursday), Norman Brannon (Texas Is the Reason), Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids), Jesse Johnson (Motion City Soundtrack), Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes), and Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate). A MUSIC GIFT FOR EVERY EMO FAN: Focusing on the second and third waves (1996–2006), Negatives includes hundreds of high-quality images of bands including Jimmy Eat World, Dashboard Confessional, My Chemical Romance, Texas Is the Reason, Taking Back Sunday, The Get Up Kids, Thursday, The Promise Ring, American Football, Saosin, and more. Perfect for: - Emo fans of all kinds and all waves - Fans of second-wave bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, third-wave bands like My Chemical Romance, and indie emo bands like Death Cab for Cutie - Music history fans - Musicians and aspiring musicians - Photography enthusiasts - Music lover's gift idea for birthday, graduation, holiday, or any special occasion

Drawing from an extensive private collection assembled over many years, this book presents a unique selection of nineteenth-century photographs of Japan, many of which are published here for the first time. Between the twilight years of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1867) and the end of the Meiji Era (1868–1912) that followed it, photography offered a unique insight into the rapid transformation of Japan from an isolated, feudal society to a modern, industrialised state. In the four decades that followed the opening of the country in 1853, the camera evolved from an imported novelty to a familiar witness of Japanese daily life. Operating from the Treaty Ports of Yokohama and elsewhere, early practitioners of photography plied an often precarious trade in images of Japan and laid the foundations of what would soon become a highly competitive industry with a global reach. Whether cherished as souvenirs of an exotic land of fond imagination or curated as visual documents of a fast-changing society, these images by foreign and Japanese photographers, often packaged in exquisitely produced albums, enjoyed a wide circulation abroad and played an important role in influencing perceptions of Japan in the West well into the early twentieth century.

The ultimate edition of Helen Levitt's classic of New York City street photography, with new high-quality reproductions Ever since it was first published in 1965, Helen Levitt's collection of photographs taken on the streets of 1940s New York City has been revered as a classic of its genre. Made in collaboration with writer James Agee, who provided the book's introduction, A Way of Seeing was published twice more with modifications during Levitt's lifetime. This volume seeks to provide a definitive edition of the book with oversight from Levitt's former assistant Marvin Hoshino, who has taken pains to include the best available prints and negatives of Levitt's images. Returned to its original compact size, this edition contains all 50 original photographs in addition to several other images meant to represent Levitt's later understanding of herself as an artist and visual storyteller. Levitt's photography has stood the test of time and now provides compelling insight into the daily lives of New York's youngest denizens long after they have grown up. Helen Levitt (1913-2009) learned the art of film development as a teenager working for a commercial portrait photographer in the Bronx. In the mid-1930s, she began to establish her own style of street photography, taking a particular interest in children who turned city sidewalks into their own personal playgrounds and art studios. A lifelong New Yorker, Levitt continued photographing urban life for nearly 70 years, during which she garnered attention from the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim. In addition to her photography, she worked for many years with James Agee and Janice Loeb on documentary films.

How did the abolitionist movement interact with women's entry into the field of photography? What does the medium have to do with menstrual taboos? Is there even such a thing as a 'feminist image'? Whether working in the studio or on the front line, women have contributed to every aspect of photography's short history. For some, gender is front and centre; for others, it's merely incidental. All have been affected by the power structures beyond their camera lenses. Far too many have been, and continue to be, overlooked. Mapping photographic developments against shifting gender rights and roles, Photography - A Feminist History shines a light on how photography has borne witness to women's movements and made the causes for which they fight visible, and how, in turn, different approaches to feminism have given us ways of understanding photographs. Authoritative and international in scope, Photography - A Feminist History features over 140 photographers, with ten thematic essays, and extended profiles on 75 key practitioners, many informed by conversations with the author.

I See a City: Todd Webb's New York focuses on the work of photographer Todd Webb produced in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. Webb photographed the city day and night, in all seasons and in all weather. Buildings, signage, vehicles, the passing throngs, isolated figures, curious eccentrics, odd corners, windows, doorways, alleyways, squares, avenues, storefronts, uptown and downtown, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Harlem. He created a richly textured portrait of the everyday life and architecture of New York. Webb's work is clear, direct, focused, layered with light and shadow, and captures the soul of these places shaped by the friction and frisson of humanity. A native of Detroit, Webb studied photography in the 1930s under the guidance of Ansel Adams at the Detroit Camera Club, served as a navy photographer during World War II, and then went on to become a successful postwar photographer. His work is in many museum collections, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Colour and texture radically influence how we perceive shapes. While looking for an innovative approach on a 1995 Miami photo shoot, photographic master Guido Argentini was moved to coat a model in silver makeup. The result was as beautiful as it was intriguing - the subtle grayish tones highlighted angles and surfaces in a way that was other-worldly. Inspired by the results, Argentini created a whole series of silver-hued models. In so doing, he uncovered a fresh perspective for nude photography. Evoking the luminous polished planes of Brancusi and the verve of Degas' ballet sketches, these photographs endow the human body with both the solidity of sculpture and the vivid energy of dance.

A successor to Phaidon's award-winning "Century: One Hundred Years of Human Progress, Suffering, Regression and Hope" (1999), "Decade" provides a comprehensive visual overview of the last 10 years in world history. Adhering to the same standards of historical accuracy and scholarship as its predecessor, this book offers a sensitive anthology of 10 years in photography that will appeal to readers of all ages and interests. "Decade" presents 500 engaging photographic images, both iconic and idiosyncratic, selected by acclaimed photo editor Eamonn McCabe and arranged in chronological order to tell the story of the first decade in our new millennium. The shorter historical span of this book, compared to "Century", allows this sequence to explore more deeply developments in art, architecture, sport and technology, alongside key moments in international political affairs, so that the reader encounters surprising moments from our history alongside those familiar from coverage in the mass media. Global in scope, these photographs tackle subjects ranging from the World Trade Center attacks of '9/11' to the AIDS epidemic in Africa, from the first tests of the Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva, to the death of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Award-winning documentary photography sits alongside the new 'citizen journalism', which has seen ordinary bystanders capture historic events equipped with nothing more sophisticated than a mobile phone camera. Each image is accompanied by both a short descriptive and an extended, historical caption, to provide a wider context within which to understand these often beautiful, always surprising, photographs. 15 historical and thematic essays are also included, exploring the events, trends and social phenomena that have characterized the decade. Engaging with debates in photography, while providing a visual record of world events both regional and international, this book provides an extraordinary insight into our recent history - dramatic, nostalgic, intimate and educational by turns.

Roger Ballen is best known for his psychologically powerful and intricately layered images that exist in a space between painting, drawing, installation, and photography. Ballenesque is the first comprehensive retrospective of his work. Separated into four parts, Ballenesque takes readers on a chronological journey through Ballen's entire oeuvre, including both iconic images and previously unpublished works. Part I explores Ballen's formative artistic influences and his later rediscovery of boyhood through photography, culminating in his first published monograph, Boyhood, in 1979. Part II charts the period between 1980 and 2000, during which time he released his seminal monograph Outland. Part III covers the years 2000-2013, when Ballen achieved global recognition and his work began to veer away from portraiture altogether. Finally, in Part IV, Ballen reflects on his career. With more than 300 photographs and an introduction by Robert JC Young, this book provides both a new way of seeing Ballen's work for those who already follow his career and a comprehensive introduction for those encountering his striking photographs for the first time.

Considered to be one of the best jazz trumpeters worldwide, Till Bronner has a hidden talent unbeknownst to most: He is also an excellent photographer. He began shooting with his first Leica camera, a Digilux 3, since then following his second passion adamantly. His black-and-white portraits portray celebrated personalities, e.g., international musicians and actors like Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beth Ditto, David Guetta, Sergio Mendes and Seal. His images capture the true essence of those before his lens, displaying them in a gorgeously unrefined and raw state. Bronner strives to establish a deep connection with his subjects, giving the viewer a glimpse into their day-to-day lives.
