Juni 1530 auf dem Reichstag zu Augsburg Kaiser Karl V. von den Reichsst nden der lutherischen Reformation dargelegt. Sie war Basistext der Religionsgespr che, Grundlage des Schmalkaldischen Bundes, Toleranzgrundlage des Augsburger Religionsfriedens und geh rt noch heute zu den verbindlichen Bekenntnisschriften der lutherischen Kirchen, in der Fassung von 1540 auch der reformierten Kirchen. Als Grundlage der Confessio Augustana dienten die von Luther verfassten Schwabacher Artikel, ein Bekenntnis der lutherischen Reformation gegen Ulrich Zwingli, und die Torgauer Artikel. Die Schrift ist zeitgleich sowohl auf Latein als auch auf Deutsch verfasst worden, wobei es Unterschiede in den beiden Fassungen gibt. Melanchthon arbeitete an der lateinischen Fassung stilistisch bis zur letzten Minute und passte den 10. Artikel ber das Abendmahl in seinem Sinne an. Martin Luther, der seit 1521 exkommuniziert und mit der Reichsacht belegt war, hielt sich w hrend des Reichstags in Coburg auf, stand mit Melanchthon aber in st ndigem Briefkontakt. Mit der auf lateinisch und deutsch verfassten Schrift sollte eine Verst ndigung mit den Katholiken erreicht werden. Die katholischen Theologen Eck und Faber schrieben auf Karls Anweisungen die Confutatio, womit die Confessio Augustana aus Sicht der Katholiken und des Kaisers widerlegt war. Die Apologie der Confessio Augustana wurde nicht mehr angenommen, und Kaiser Karl V. best tigte das Wormser Edikt in seiner Wirksamkeit. Philipp Melanchthon 1497-1560 war ein Philologe, Philosoph, Humanist, Theologe, Lehrbuchautor und neulateinischer Dichter.
